Purpose:
Mainly used by the OMNR Fire Program for recording details about specific forest fires. The information that is collected is used for numerous operational and program management activities within the fire program, and for forest management and land-use planning activities. It is also an ad-hoc Forest Information Manual deliverable to Sustainable Forest License (SFL) holders each September through the FI Portal. The SFL stakeholders feel that the 40 hectares and above benchmark set for the Fire Disturbance Area (mapped perimeters) is too high. The SFL ground truth the estimated starting point of the fire, and collect additional information about the actual perimeter for the annual reporting of forest depletions (timber volume loss etc...).

Supplemental Information:
Legislated or Legal Authority for Collection: Ad-hoc Forest Information Manual annual report information requested by Sustainable Forest License holders to supplement fire disturbance perimeters (see fire disturbance area data class). Additional Time Period Information: Majority of fires occur during the fire season April 1 to October 31 st Data is collected on an on-going basis therefore the time period 'end date' may be more recent than indicated above. Starting in 2005 as a result of the new Fire Management Strategy fires which were previously classified as OFR in the Far North of the Province (north of 54 degrees latitude) are reclassified as IFR Starting in 2005 as a result of the new Fire Management Strategy fire response objectives have changed: OBJECTIVE CODES 1989 TO 2004 SUP SUPPRESSION - denotes a dedicated attempt to control the fire. PRO PROTECTION - denotes an attempt to limit the spread of the fire in certain locations to protect values. MON MONITOR - denotes a fire on which no action was taken except for observations. Monitor also includes Prescribed Burns. OBJECTIVE CODES 2005 MOD MODIFIED - A Wildfire that is managed using a combination of suppression techniques, including direct and indirect attack as well as monitoring to steer, contain or otherwise manage fire activity within a pre-determined perimeter such that costs and/or damage are minimized, and/or benefits from the fire are maximized. MON MONITORED - A wildfire that is observed and assessed to determine the response option required to minimize social disruption and/or significant value and resource impacts while achieving beneficial ecological, economic or resource management objectives FUL FULL- A wildfire which requires immediate, aggressive initial attack and/or sustained suppression action until the fire is declared out MDP MODIFIED UNDER PRESCRIPTION - Initial attack using response options and suppression tactics to steer or contain the fire to minimize costs and damage and maximize any beneficial effects that may be associated with a fire in accordance with an approved burning prescription MNP MONITORED UNDER PRESCRIPTION - Observation and assessment of a fire to determine the need for full and/or modified response to minimize costs damage and social disruption while maximizing any beneficial effects associated with a fire in accordance with an approved burning prescription.
